If you are an International Student coming from a country that requires a visa to attend classes in Washington, DC, we recommend you start the visa application process as soon as possible. English Entry Exam

All candidates whose native language is not English are required to take an English exam upon arrival at Johns Hopkins SAIS. This exam is independent from any exams required in your admissions application (e.g.; TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, and GMAT). Based on the exam results, students may be required to do further English language training during their tenure at the school.

Bilingual students can be exempt from the English exam if they fulfill two of the three criteria to be considered a native English speaker. See Proficiency Requirements at English Language Studies.

Those students who wish to be exempt from the English exam must declare English as their native language in the application form.

Pre-Term

Students admitted conditionally based on their TOEFL/IELTS score are required to attend Pre-Term. See more information for students admitted with requirements.
